What attracts Russians to life and leisure in Portugal?

- Portugal: accessibility, housing, and appeal for Russians
- What attracts tourists to the picturesque corners of southern Portugal?
Portugal and its accessibility
Portugal is located a considerable distance from Russia, and often traveling here requires several transfers. There are not as many Russian speakers here compared to, for example, Spain. For some, this may be a disadvantage, while for others, it can be an advantage. Most Russians prefer to buy property here, often choosing apartments in buildings that are three or four stories high. Typically, these purchases are made for personal vacations, and an important condition is convenient pedestrian access to the ocean.
Administrative division
The country is administratively divided into several regions, five of which (Algarve, Alentejo, Lisbon, North, and Central) are located on the continent, while two are on islands (the Azores and Madeira). Some regions are further divided into subregions and municipalities, which gives the governance system a more structured appearance.
Lisbon: the capital of Portugal
The capital and largest city of Portugal is Lisbon, which is rightly considered the westernmost capital of continental Europe. This city amazes with the diversity of its architecture, which includes many styles—from medieval castles to modern buildings. Among the famous attractions, one can note:
- St. George's Castlebuilt between the 9th and 14th centuries, offering a magnificent view of the city;
- Church of Santa Engraciawhere the graves of many famous historical figures are located, including the great navigator Vasco da Gama;
- Bethlehem Tower (Torre de Belem)built in the 16th century and included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Climate and the real estate market
Lisbon is famous for its mild climate and friendly atmosphere, which attracts people at first glance. Here, Russians sometimes consider options for purchasing real estate not only for their own residence but also for future rental, as the rental market in Lisbon is actively developing throughout the year, not just during tourist seasons.
Porto: the northern capital
Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, is often referred to as the northern capital of the country. The name "Portugal" itself comes from the Latin name of this city — Portucale. Porto attracts many tourists thanks to its attractions, including:
- Port Wine Museum,
- Tram Museum,
- Bridgeswith unforgettable views.
The historic center of Porto has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, confirming its cultural significance.
Coastal resorts
Among the coastal resorts, cities like Cascais and Estoril stand out, as well as the famous Silver Coast region in the west and the southern Algarve area. Cascais and Estoril are in high demand due to their proximity to Lisbon and the airport. These resorts enjoy wonderful sunny weather, warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Estoril is famous for its prestigious casino.
Lisbon Riviera
The Lisbon Riviera is considered the most luxurious destination on the coast, offering its visitors majestic landscapes and a multitude of opportunities for relaxation and entertainment both to the north and south of the capital. Each of these areas provides a unique atmosphere and appealing conditions for living and leisure, making Portugal even more attractive to Russians and travelers from all over the world.
Picturesque settlements of southern Portugal
In the southern part of Portugal, you can find picturesque towns like Carcavelos and Estoril.

Instead, the region delights with luxurious villas and cozy coves featuring small sandy beaches. The Algarve, as a well-known tourist region, is famous for its convenient transportation, particularly the presence of an international airport in the city of Faro. The climate in this area deserves special attention, as it has its unique characteristics.
The climate of the Algarve
Thanks to the surrounding hills to the north, one can enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate here, which is manifested in:
- In warm winters
- On not exhausting hot summer days
Entertainment in the Algarve
The Algarve is famous for its pine and eucalyptus forests, which create a unique atmosphere and microclimate in the region. There are plenty of entertainment options available for tourists:
- Surfing
- Shark hunting
- Golf
- Tennis
- Visiting reserves with flamingos and dolphinariums
For thrill-seekers, bullfights are regularly held in the region, and the presence of several casinos adds extra opportunities for leisure. This region, located in the southernmost part of Portugal, is the edge of all Europe, where you can find wide sandy beaches stretching for several kilometers and modern residential complexes that serve as major attractions for travelers.
Secluded corners of the Algarve
Despite its high popularity, you can still find secluded spots for a peaceful retreat in the Algarve. The travel season here lasts from mid-April to mid-October, offering a wide variety of options.
Historical landmarks of Faro
The city of Faro, which occupies a central place in the region, is famous for its numerous significant architectural and historical landmarks. One of the main attractions is the stadium that hosted the UEFA European Championship in 2004, as well as the 19th-century Chapel of Bones, whose walls are adorned with the remains of monks.
Faro also offers its visitors a multitude of churches, monasteries, palaces, and museums, creating an atmosphere of rich historical heritage.
The beaches of the Silver Coast and the town of Obidos
Speaking of the Silver Coast and the medieval town of Obidos, it is worth noting that these places are perfect for those seeking solitude and a peaceful getaway. There are no crowds of tourists on the beaches, and the stunning natural beauty, including ancient pines and international-level golf courses, makes a strong case for choosing this destination.
Islands of Portugal: the popularity of Madeira
When considering the islands of Portugal, Madeira holds the top spot in popularity among tourists. This island, located to the southwest of the continent, is famous for its mild climate with no sharp temperature fluctuations and its mesmerizing landscapes.
Since the early 19th century, Madeira has attracted the wealthy and famous from Europe, as only two resorts of that time gained popularity: the French Riviera and, of course, Madeira. The distance to the mainland is about 1000 kilometers, while this jewel is much closer to Africa.
Recovery after natural disasters
Despite the devastating impact of the storm and heavy rains in 2010, when the island suffered significant losses, it was able to recover quickly and regain its popularity among tourists, offering a magnificent climate and unique nature. Many return here to enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of this amazing place.
