The dream of living in Europe
Dreams of living in European countries have always been a source of inspiration for me. My first experience traveling abroad happened in 1991 when I went to France with a football team to participate in a children's tournament. The impressions from this trip had a strong impact on me – the world I saw was drastically different from the one I had lived in before, in the Soviet Union.
A few years later, in the early 2000s, my wife and I began actively exploring various corners of Europe, taking advantage of tourism opportunities. Each time we traveled to new countries, we were captivated by the outstanding natural beauty and the soothing atmosphere of the continent. The freedom of movement without borders only intensified our desire to move to Europe.
The emergence of ideas for moving.
By 2010, I realized that the internet offers numerous opportunities for earning money, regardless of where you live, and this opened new horizons for our move. We began to thoroughly research all aspects of immigration, getting to know various intermediaries who offered services to help organize our relocation.
We discovered many routes, including:
- The possibility of becoming refugees in France
- Business immigration programs that particularly interest us
Country selection
Different countries offer a variety of programs for business immigrants, but the requirements for candidates vary significantly. For example, some countries require large investments, while others mandate a certain number of local employees in the company. We considered countries like Germany, Italy, Slovakia, and Hungary, but ultimately chose Slovenia.
It's interesting that until this moment we had no idea about it and hadn't had the opportunity to visit this country. After thoroughly studying materials about Slovenia, we concluded that it is the perfect place to live.
The moving process
When we decided on the course of action and made the decision to relocate, we signed an agreement with an agency that took on the process of preparing all the necessary documents. Since it was a matter of business immigration, we needed to register a company in Slovenia.
Based on this registration, we were able to apply for a residence permit. All stages of preparing the documentation were entrusted to our intermediaries. We only needed to go to Slovenia once to sign the necessary papers with a notary and send the package of documents to the local authorities for the establishment of a legal entity and the processing of the residence permit.
Moving to Slovenia
This stage took place in 2012. By 2013, we already had temporary residence permits. In March of that year, we packed our things into two suitcases and made our first flight to Slovenia. Now we have permanent resident status. Moreover, we have gained the right to participate in local elections.
Issuance of temporary and permanent residence permits
Despite having a temporary residence permit, it became clear to us that every one to two years we needed to gather documents to extend this status. After five years, we were able to apply for a permanent residence permit, which is issued for ten years and, as it turned out, is renewed quite easily without the need to collect a significant amount of documents.
Nevertheless, the conditions for obtaining temporary and permanent residence permits in Slovenia have become stricter over time. Immigration laws are constantly tightening, which significantly complicates the process of moving to this country. We fondly remember that we were able to take advantage of the opportunity and realize our dream of a new life in such a beautiful and peaceful place. Slovenia has opened up amazing new prospects for us, and we have never regretted the decision we made.
Strict immigration conditions
In recent years, the immigration and residence permit application process in Slovenia has become much stricter. One of the new requirements for extending status is the necessity to pass a language exam, which adds yet another hurdle to an already complicated process.
When I first moved to this country, the conditions for immigration were much simpler, but frankly, there was very little information about the various aspects of relocation. We had no clear idea of where to seek help, what documents were needed, and what the next steps were.
Nevertheless, with the emergence of social networks, it has become easier to ask questions and receive valuable advice from people who already have experience in this area. This has led to a decrease in the prices of intermediary services, and many immigrants have started to handle their documentation on their own.
Housing search
When I moved in 2013, finding a rental place didn't cause me much concern. Accompanied by a realtor, I was able to view numerous listings and choose the most suitable one in just a few days. Since then, 10 years have passed, and during this time, I've changed four apartments and three cities, each time finding housing relatively easily.
However, in recent years, there has been a steady increase in the cost of renting and selling real estate in Slovenia. Today, residents and potential renters are concerned about the lack of affordable options and rising prices.
Platforms for finding housing
There are many platforms on the Internet for real estate sales and rentals, as well as specialized groups on social media. In the past, the housing market was more accessible and varied, but now everything has changed. Finding a suitable option can take significantly more time.
Property owners are becoming more selective with candidates, preferring to choose more reliable tenants, which complicates the search process.
Conclusion of a lease agreement
As for the rental agreement, it can be concluded without the involvement of a notary or realtor. You can find sample contracts in bookstores that need to be filled out with the basic information. However, if you wish, there is an option to seek assistance from a notary, which will cost approximately150–200 euros.
A notarized contract will provide the owner with additional protection in case of disputes with tenants regarding payment or eviction, although fortunately, I have not had to deal with such situations.
The adaptation process
The adaptation period to the new country went quite smoothly for me, as many locals speak English. The Slovenian language, although it belongs to the Slavic group, is quite different from Russian. There are some similarities among the words, but quickly mastering conversational Slovenian is difficult, so English has become a good alternative for me.
Right after moving, I started playing football with Russian-speaking immigrants, which really helped me socialize. Then my wife and I decided to enroll in Slovenian language courses, which significantly helped us adapt better to the local conditions and gain a deeper understanding of Slovenian culture and traditions.
Our progress
Now we feel significantly more confident, understand more about the customs, and can communicate with those around us without any difficulties. I hope that our integration into this new life will be successful and fruitful.
In a relatively short time, we have managed to establish many new acquaintances and make friends. It should be noted that communicating with the locals is not a problem at all. However, most of our interactions are with Russian-speaking people. Communication with native Slovenians is quite rare and usually limited to a few words with neighbors or conversations with parents at the kindergarten where our children study.
The beauty and diversity of Slovenia
Slovenia amazes with the magnificence and diversity of its natural landscapes. This country, although not very large—twice the size of the Moscow region—can boast several unique regions. Here you can see:
- the magnificent Alps
- azure Adriatic Sea
- mesmerizing lakes
- dense forests
Order and neatness are present everywhere; even in the most remote corners, you can find well-maintained areas, renovated buildings, and good roads. The highways are on par with the best roads found in Italy and Austria.
Life in Ljubljana
We spent the entire first year of our lives in Ljubljana, not far from an important transport artery. We rented a standard apartment in a ten-story residential building, and this area reminded me of Moscow, especially my hometown of Timiryazevsky. There are many high-rise buildings here, and there are very few pedestrians and cars on the streets. The traffic organization is particularly interesting: cars are parked and drive on underground levels, which makes it much easier for pedestrians to navigate on the surface.
Storage rooms and amenities
In most apartment buildings in Slovenia, there are designated storage rooms for keeping belongings. Typically, these spaces are located in the basement, and each apartment is allocated a small storage room of about 2-3 square meters. It's worth noting that in some buildings, residents on the first floor have direct access to the street and even small plots of land.
Moving to the sea
After a year of living in the capital, we started thinking about changing our place of residence. Why stay in Ljubljana when there’s an opportunity to live closer to the sea? Even though the distance to the coast is only 100 kilometers, the climate there is different: it’s warmer and sunnier, with less precipitation, and snow doesn’t fall every year.
In the end, we found an apartment in the very center of the resort town of Portorož. However, the search for long-term rental housing on the coast turned out to be not as easy as expected. Locals most often rent out apartments for short stays during the summer season, and at other times of the year, they are only available for students on a long-term basis.
Life in a townhouse
In Slovenia, most people live in private houses or townhouses. Currently, we live in a townhouse located in the area of Koper — the capital of the coastal region. This small town can easily be walked from one end to the other in just half an hour.
Living in a separate house or townhouse is fundamentally different from life in an urban apartment. We don't have neighbors above or below us, and we have a small plot with beautiful flowers, loungers, and other amenities that are only available to dacha owners in Moscow. This feeling of coziness and tranquility greatly enhances the quality of life.

Some prefer to shop in Italy, as they can find products that are not available in the Slovenian market.

A similar situation is observed with home internet, averaging around €32. Fuel prices are about €1.45 per liter, and utility costs for a family of three will be at least €200 per month.

- During the winter period, families could expect heating subsidies of €130.
- All parents receive a child allowance, which is approximately €130 for each child.

To use paid highways, it is necessary to purchase a vignette, which costs about €110 per year. Car liability insurance (OSAGO) costs between €120 and €350.
Medical services
The cost of medical services in Slovenia can be quite high; however, basic health insurance covers 60-70% of all expenses. With an additional policy, which starts at €35 per month per person, access to medical services becomes almost free. For children, medical care is provided free of charge.
Life in Slovenia
Slovenia is a unique country with a high level of comfort, where all necessary services are located in close proximity. Our city is near the borders of Croatia and Italy, allowing for a combination of beach holidays on the Adriatic coast with shopping in Italian cities. The crime rate in the region is extremely low, which is especially noticeable in the absence of a large police presence on the streets. There are virtually no migrants from Africa and Asia in our area, which adds to the sense of safety.
We feel protected, and having a glass door at the entrance to our apartment only enhances our confidence in the safety of our home.
Conclusion
Ultimately, our journey to a new life in Slovenia became not only the realization of a long-held dream but also a complete transformation of our worldview. From the moment I first found myself abroad, where quiet streets with cozy cafes became part of my daily life, I understood that every detail matters. Europe opened its doors to us, allowing us to enjoy not only the beauty of the local landscapes but also the richness of a culture I had never had the chance to experience before.
The process of emigration, although challenging, brought us new opportunities and inspiration. We became not just spectators, but active participants in this beautiful world. Lessons we've learned

- Adapting to new living conditions takes time and effort.
- Language and communication with locals help with integration.
Now, as I look back on the past, I realize that a significant amount of hard work awaited us, but each obstacle only strengthened our determination. We learned to adapt to new living conditions, and thanks to this, our status was confirmed, and our dreams of integration came true.
Unfortunately, immigration laws are changing, and I see that the path for future emigrants is becoming increasingly difficult. But I am convinced that desire, diligence, and the right decisions can lead to success. I hope that my experience will inspire others to take similar steps.Don't be afraid to dream and pursue your plans..
