Overview of Portugal's visa requirements

Portugal requires most foreign nationals to obtain a valid visa before entering its territory. Citizens of some countries are exempt from this requirement, but they still have to fulfill other requirements to legally travel in Portugal. The type of visa required depends on the purpose and length of stay in Portugal, as well as other factors such as nationality and country of residence.

Eligibility for a Schengen visa to Portugal

In order to obtain a Schengen visa to Portugal, applicants must meet certain criteria:

- Be at least 18 years of age or have parental permission if under 18 years of age;

- have sufficient funds (at least 90 euros per day) for the duration of your stay in Portugal;

- Have an itinerary that includes a return trip within 90 days;

- not pose a threat to health or safety; and

- not to break any laws while in Portugal.

Required supporting documents to apply for a Portuguese Schengen visa

When applying for a Portuguese Schengen visa, several documents are required:

- A valid passport with at least two blank pages;

- proof of residency;

- Travel medical insurance with coverage up to 30,000 euros, valid for the entire period of stay in all countries visited;

- a recent bank statement confirming that you have sufficient funds (at least 90 euros per day);

- airline reservation or ticket (non-refundable);

- proof that the applicant has sufficient funds for the return trip (e.g., round-trip tickets);

- A letter from your employer with vacation dates and salary information;

- a copy of a valid residence permit if the application is not from the home country;

- Marriage certificate if the applicant is traveling with a spouse or dependent children 18 years of age or older;

- police certificate if the applicant has recently visited other EU/Schengen countries.
