A growing number of Americans are working remotely, which has led to an increase in homebuyer migration. While some are moving within the U.S., others may be considering a move to another country. There are many countries around the world where expats can live affordably. In case you are thinking about moving overseas, for many Americans, the elimination of traveling to the office has opened up new living opportunities. As more companies move toward hybrid or remote work, a study by freelancing platform Upwork shows that 18.9 million Americans are planning to move to a new home. According to Upwork's data from a survey of more than 23,000 people, 28% of respondents say they intend to move more than four hours away from their current location''residencies. "Shifting work habits and travel habits have caused a ripple of change," the Upwork researchers wrote. "This is especially true when we look at the geographic implications of remote work.
While many Americans will move into the housing market within the United States, others may consider relocating to another country. To determine where American expats can live comfortably, Insider has ranked the most affordable housing markets around the world that can also offer a good quality of life. In order to understand the potentially best countries''for moving Americans, we used data on house price-to-income ratios from the International Monetary Fund, the latest Human Development Index, and an analysis of the average cost of a two-bedroom downtown apartment from the financial website Finder. We looked at 57 countries other than the U.S., where data from these three sources was available. After looking at dozens of countries, we were able to identify places outside the U.S. where Americans can live relatively inexpensively and have a high standard of living based on the average rank of the three datasets we used. If Americans are brave enough to make the long trek, Ireland - the leader of our list - not only offers them a relatively low cost of living, but also spectacular views of nature.
