A 41-year-old black American mom buys a house in Italy for $62,000.
Meet Stephanie Sinclair, a 41-year-old black mom from Atlanta, Georgia, who decided to make Sicily her second home. In 2022, she became the proud owner of a $62,000 home in Sicily, Italy, avoiding the high housing prices in the United States.
After leaving her marketing job at a large company in 2012, Sinclair took a spontaneous trip to Sicily with her six-year-old son, Caden, which cost her about $250 for the plane ticket. "I knew from the moment I landed that I liked it here, and it feels almost like home to me," she told NBC Washington.
Sinclair, the owner of her own tea company LaRue 1680, decided to settle in Sicily not only because of its picturesque beauty and delicious food but also because of the warmth of the Sicilian community. "My favorite part of life in Sicily is that you really live. I realize that in the United States, life is more focused on work. Here, I can truly relax and do what I love," she says.
Motivated by the volatility of the real estate market in the U.S., especially during the pandemic, Sinclair decided to expand her search globally. Through a Facebook group, she discovered the town of Mussomeli in Sicily, known for selling houses for just 1 euro. In March 2022, Sinclair struck a deal for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 4,000-square-foot historic home for only 59,000 euros, or about 62,000 dollars. Now in the process of renovating, she values preserving the architectural details of her home, which is estimated to be around 500 years old. "I always said I could picture myself living here, but more like in a dream," she adds.
Life in Sicily has provided Sinclair not only with a cultural getaway but also with financial benefits. The main living expenses are minimal, with lower utility costs and more affordable fresh produce compared to Atlanta. So far, Sinclair visits Sicily every three months. However, she plans to spend more time abroad after her son graduates from high school. In the future, Sinclair anticipates retiring in Italy, where she estimates she will need only $450,000 compared to $2.5 million in the U.S. Above all, she is grateful for the warmth and hospitality that have made Sicily a true home away from home. "I will always be an American on foreign soil - I will always be an outsider," Sinclair said. "And I think it's very important to remember that when you immerse yourself in other cultures."

CORRECTION:Earlier in this article, it was stated that the house is 500 years old. Now it is mentioned that the age of the house is estimated to be around 500 years.
