$6 million estate in France used to be a pilgrimage stop.

This castle in the Brittany region, in the far northwest of France, is a stop on the way of pilgrims traveling the holy Jacob's Way. The pilgrims' journey ended in Galicia, Spain, in the crypt of the Apostle. The manor house is located in Pont-Aven, a village in northwestern France known as an artists' colony that included post-impressionist Paul Gauguin.

The chateau, built in the 16th century, is located in the mill town of Pont-Aven, known for its artists' colony, which included Paul Gauguin. Today, the village is home to the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art, the Pont-Aven Museum of Fine Arts and several galleries. The area still inspires artists with its picturesque location at the intersection of the River Aven and the tidal estuary. The estate is about five acres in size and is close to the water. It includes the main house, farmhouse, stone cottage and boat dock.

The main house features an unobtrusive dark sandstone exterior. The entrances and windows are decorated with lively ogee arches, which give the castle elements of Gothic architecture. Attic windows adorn its pitched roof. Inside the castle, the spacious rooms have been restored and updated.

Interior details include a massive wooden staircase and granite fireplaces. Wood ceilings with decorative beams and wood floors add character to the bedrooms.

An approximately 2,000-square-foot farmhouse next to the garage contains two apartments. There is also a stone cottage with a grass roof and sleeping accommodation on the second floor. The price of the estate is about $5.98 million.

Besides pilgrims and artists, Pont-Aven is also known for pancakes. Local cafes offer these thin crepes with a variety of fillings, such as seafood cooked in garlic butter or a combination of Camembert cheese, figs and caramelized onions. Local ciders are a popular combination. Also worth checking out are the Breton pancakes or galettes that are made in Pont-Aven. These cookies are baked in a local factory and packaged in decorative metal boxes.

Other attractions in Pont-Aven include a flower festival in the summer, a walking trail along the river, or a stroll along a path that introduces the town's remaining watermills.
