7 awesome Petit Syrahs from California to drink right now.
Published November 9, 2023.
If you ask a small group of wine lovers if they have ever tasted wine made from Petite Syrah, most would answer in the negative. This is absolutely unfortunate, because if you're looking for a wine that has abundant fruit flavor and rich color, Petite Syrah should be on your list. To be honest, Petite Syrah is not one of the traditional aristocratic grape varieties, in fact, it is quite young. It was created in 1880 by François Duriv at his agricultural laboratory in Montpellier, France, from a random cross between Peloursin and Syrah. Durive took credit for the resulting grape and prominently named it in his honor. In France and''In Australia it is still called Durive, but when it arrived in California in 1878 it was mistaken for Syrah and given the nickname "Petite Syrah" because of its low grape yields. It was originally used to produce dark colored juice for Port style fortified wines, but is now used as a varietal wine or for blending. The vineyard changed the spelling from Syrah to Syrah, and wine lovers should be happy to know that most of the cultivation of Petite Syrah is in the United States. Even California has a group of winemakers called PS, I Love You (psiloveyou.org), which is an organization that supports Petite Syrah.
With California in mind, here are seven California Petite Sirahs worth trying now.
