And several events in its honor are planned throughout the weekend. Here are some of the ceremonies, concerts and events you'll find (all taking place on Saturday).
Ceremony at the Memorial for Women Who Served in the Military
The memorial at Memorial and Schley streets in Arlington. The Women Who Served in the Military Memorial, located in Arlington National Cemetery, will hold a ceremony to honor female veterans and their families from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The memorial will honor women veterans and their families. Retired Army Gen. Suzanne Puanani Vares-Lam will deliver the keynote address, representatives from the six branches of the military will deliver speeches, and a ceremonial wreath-laying ceremony will be held. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony. Tickets are free, with an optional donation available.
The Arlington National Cemetery will hold its annual Veterans Day memorial event at Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery will hold its annual event in the Memorial Amphitheater beginning at 11:00 a.m. The event will be held in the Memorial Amphitheater. The program will include performances by the U.S. Air Force Band and the U.S. Air Force Chancellors Choir, as well as a parade of colors from veterans' organizations. The event is free and open to the public, but seats are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. This year the number of places for laying wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be limited for participants in the ceremony.
Veterans Day Concert: Dedication
The dedication of 3101 Wisconsin Ave. Attend an evening concert at the U.S. National Cathedral featuring the U.S. Marine Corps Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Cathedral Choir. They will perform patriotic classics and popular music from the wartime era of American history.
Wreath-laying ceremony at the Naval Memorial
701 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Come to the Naval Memorial and honor past and present U.S. Navy sailors. The public ceremony will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Ceremony and wreath laying at the Korean War Veterans Memorial
Address: 10 Daniel French Dr., SW. The Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation will hold an event at 3 p.m. honoring veterans who served in the 1950s conflict. The foundation is asking participants to register and asking veterans to wear their dress uniforms.
Veterans Day in Mount Vernon
3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy., Mount Vernon. George Washington's former estate offers a rich program of events. The day begins at 09:30 with a ceremony organized by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Other activities include a performance by the Williamsburg Colonial Chorus, a meet-and-greet with characters from the era, and educational reading sessions. Events, speakers and learning opportunities will take place throughout the day until 4:00pm. Tickets for the hacienda are $28 for adults, $15 for children ages 6 to 11, and free for children under 5. Free tickets are available to all active, former or retired military personnel.
Honoring Veterans
Fourth Street and Independence Ave, SW. The National Museum of North American Indians will host a free event honoring Native American veterans beginning at 10:00 am. The museum will offer workshops, short films and more. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the designer of the National Native American Veterans Memorial and participate in a wreath-laying ceremony where the Commemorative Torch will be lit.
On Veterans Day at the World War II Memorial
The address is 1750 Independence Ave, SW. The National World War II Memorial Foundation and the National Park Service are organizing a ceremony to honor the more than 16 million men and women who served in World War II. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., there will be musical performances and guest appearances, and veterans will lay wreaths on the Memorial Freedom Wall during the "Parade of Heroes."
