AmaWaterways vs Viking: Which popular river cruise line is right for you?

Among the cruise companies sailing the rivers of Europe, Southeast Asia and Egypt, two of the best-known names in the industry are AmaWaterways and Viking. Each brand has its own specialties, such as free tours from AmaWaterways and Viking's Scandinavian interior. But does it really matter which company to choose? The answer is yes. AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst and Jimmy Murphy. They own a fleet of 26 vessels, with three new vessels to be launched in 2024 and 2025. Certain benefits of AmaWaterways are the excursions included in the cruise price. Passengers can choose from three or four excursions at each port, including walking tours or bus rides to nearby attractions. The company also offers bicycles for exploring the neighborhood on your own. The main difference between AmaWaterways vessels is the presence of a French balcony and a large balcony. This creates great views and a feeling of spaciousness in the cabins.

Viking

Viking was founded in 1997. The company owns 69 riverboats and two ocean-going vessels. Viking trips include one free excursion in each port, as well as additional paid excursions.

The vessels of both companies have different capacities and designs. AmaWaterways has ships ranging in size from 140 to 196 passengers. The AmaMagna vessel on the Danube is a flagship, wider than usual, and has large staterooms and restaurants. With Viking, all ships are identical and can accommodate up to 190 passengers. Cabins on Viking tend to be a bit smaller than on AmaWaterways, but they have more options for choosing cabins with balconies.
