An American couple buys a house in a "forgotten region" of Italy. Here's what happened next.
Two American couples, Charles Stevens and Ben Di Rienzo, who have lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, have decided to change their residence and move to Italy.
The couple had lived for many years in New York City and felt the psychological and financial pressures that accompany life in a large metropolis. They decided it was time to start enjoying life and move to Europe.
A visit to Italy, a connection with Italian relatives and the loss of a friend to the coronavirus prompted them to consider relocation. The couple considered various cities in Italy, but opted for the town of Vinchiaturo Molise. This is where Di Rienzo's hometown is located.
A couple purchased a home with views of the Appennine Mountains and the valley below.
Before moving, they sold all their possessions and settled in Italy, where they began to explore local traditions and learn how to make cheese, olive oil, and other local foods. They quickly adapted to their new life and feel happier, healthier and fuller of life compared to their time in the United States.
They note that the quality of life in Italy is higher, and housing and medical costs are much lower. The couple has no intention of returning to the United States and plans to obtain Italian citizenship. They are happy to have taken this step in their lives and to have discovered the benefits and enjoyment of living in Italy in their adult years.
