Cashierless microstore at charging stations for electric cars - coming soon!
Electric car owners have to wait to charge their vehicles at public charging stations. Now, however, those who want to grab a bite to eat while they wait may find cashier-less mini stores popping up at charging stations across the U.S., created by a North Carolina startup.
Although battery charging technology is getting closer to giving drivers the ability to charge their cars as easily as filling up at gas stations, electric cars today have to park and plug in for a while. Automakers such as Audi and Porsche are already exploring luxury rest points for customers at specialized charging stations, but Juxta, a subsidiary of Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a provider of point-of-sale and payment systems, aims to create a convenience store.
The Nomad microstore was designed as a turnkey solution for retail outlets of electric vehicle charging stations or hydrogen fueling stations that can be delivered by truck, fully equipped and assembled, and can operate around the clock without the need for staff, similar to solutions from Amazon, Wheelys and 7-Eleven.
There is a 264-square-foot space inside. feet (24.5 sq. m.), where retailers can fill "state-of-the-art shelving and presentation units" with up to 600 items with a quick turnaround. Shoppers can access using any debit or credit card, and sensors in conjunction with cameras record what they take from the shelves. This data is used to create a digital shopping cart in the cloud, and shoppers can confirm purchases on a large touchscreen near the exit or simply grab the item and walk away, "trusting the technology to record their purchases and charge their credit or debit card as needed.
