Blacksite: black Americans seek life in Africa amid racism.

More and more black Americans are finding their new homes in Africa. They are enjoying a significantly lower cost of living and, more importantly, an absence of the racism and discrimination they faced in the United States. The Covid pandemic and the fight against racism after the assassination of George Floyd led some black Americans to seek a different way of life overseas, in a movement some call "Blackseat." Those moving to Africa are also looking for a connection to their ancestors. They are not so much interested in money as in recognition, a path that many intellectuals and artists have previously traveled.

A new life in Africa is now open to people from a wide variety of professions who are able to work remotely.

Migration is supported by active advocates on social media and government programs such as the citizenship program in Sierra Leone and the Beyond Returns campaign in Ghana. According to Ghana's Office of African Diaspora Affairs, at least 1,500 African Americans moved to the country between 2019 and 2023. Despite potential fears of newcomers, including a wave of radical anti-sex laws on the continent, black Americans are making the journey anyway.
