The history of the estate dates back at least 13 centuries and has withstood the trials and changes of the last 800 years, but perhaps most interesting is its owner and connections to European royalty. That's because Chyknell Hall is being sold by Corinna zu Sein-Wittgenstein, former mistress of King Juan Carlos I of Spain, father of the reigning King Felipe VI.

The German-born Danish businesswoman, whose affair with the married monarch came to light in 2012, two years before his abdication in 2014, bought the estate for £6 million in 2015 and carried out extensive upgrades to the property.

"She has transformed the estate and its grounds into something stunning and she is popular in the local community," a friend told the Mail On Sunday newspaper.

"Chyknell is first mentioned in local records in 1209 when it was owned by the De Checkenhull family, who gave the estate its name," explains the estate's website. "The Grade II listed Regency style building was built in 1814 and still stands testament to elegant living today." The estate is also a popular wedding venue.
