Montenegro has frozen 44 real estate properties of sanctioned Russian citizens.
In connection with Montenegro's full alignment with the European Union's foreign and security policy, Interior Minister Filip Adzic announced that the first step in freezing the assets of Russian citizens under sanctions was taken on June 10. "For 44 properties, the Agency for Cadastre and State Property has adopted appropriate decisions restricting the disposal of property in Montenegro. This applies to 34 Russian citizens against whom sanctions were imposed," Minister Adzic said.
The Ministry notes that Montenegro is resolute in fulfilling its obligations when deciding to impose international restrictive measures, as evidenced by the fact that property was frozen just ten days after a meeting with the head of the Unit for Montenegro and Serbia at the European Commission's Directorate General for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Michael Miller, as well as with the head of the European Union Delegation to Montenegro, Oana Kristina Pop.
The Montenegrin government on April 8 formally imposed sanctions against Russia over its military aggression in Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia include freezing the property and economic resources of some Russian citizens and companies in Montenegro, as well as banning Russian pro-Russian media.
Montenegro's airspace has previously been closed to Russian aircraft, which was concretely demonstrated on June 5 when Russian diplomatic chief Sergei Lavrov was prevented from visiting Serbia because Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria closed their airspace.
