Nine companies are submitting bids for the Pedernales Airport.

Nine companies owned by Spanish, American, Canadian and Korean capital have submitted preliminary proposals for the construction of an airport in the Cabo Rojo tourist area, Pedernales. A public tender will be announced on Nov. 20, Sigmund Freund, director general of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships, told Spanish newspaper Cinco Días. Spanish companies, Acciona and OHLA, are also interested in obtaining a license, while others were not mentioned in the article. "A total of nine proposals were submitted. Besides Acciona and OHLA, American, Canadian and Korean groups have also shown interest," the newspaper quoted a Dominican official as saying.

The tender process for the construction of the airport, which will have a three-kilometer strip and will be located in the municipality of Oviedo, a 15-minute drive from the new tourist destination, will begin on November 20. "The deadlines set out in the project are being met.

Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of January 2024, with completion scheduled for December 2025," Freund emphasized. He also noted that an annual demand of 250,000 passengers is expected at the start of operations and this will increase to one million passengers by 2042, making it the third largest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic. To cope with the increase in air traffic and passenger traffic, the plan calls for the construction of a second runway and a second terminal.

The Dominican government owns 66% in the consortium, Freund confirmed, noting the important costs of providing land for the construction of hotels, a shopping center and other points of interest. The State of Dominica will own the nine hotels built in the first phase of the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales project and will outsource their operation to six hotel chains. American chain Hyatt will have the largest presence, with three hotels of well-known brands Dreams, Secrets and Ziba, followed also by American chain Karisma (with two hotels of brands Margaritaville and Nickelodeon) and Canadian chain Sunwing (with two hotels of brands Blue Diamond and Royalton). The only Spanish chain will be Iberostar, clarifies the report.
