The University of Mato Grosso (Unemat) and Sichuan University of Science and Technology (SUSE) in China signed a cooperation agreement on Monday (October 24) in Cuiaba. The agreement provides for the exchange of students and professors from both universities, as well as the opening of a Confucius Institute on Unemat's Sinop campus, which will feature a Foreign Language Center with Portuguese courses for Chinese and''Mandarin for Brazilians.
The signing ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Unemat office in Cuiabá, where Unemat and the Mato Grosso International Center (Nurimat) welcomed the delegation from China and were able to introduce the local university and learn about the Chinese university.
The chairman of the Sichuan University of Science and Technology Management Committee, Wang Honghui, explained that the cooperation agreement aims to improve the quality of education at both institutions. "Through this agreement, our students and teachers will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and learn about Brazil, and Brazilian students and teachers will learn about China, which helps to improve the quality of education," Wang' said'Honghui.
.Unemat rector Vera Macuea stressed that the next step is to develop a work plan with tentative planning for the first mission as early as the first semester of 2024. "SUSE has a great interest in the field of engineering as they are very strong in this area, but they also have a great interest in languages and cultures," she said.
Vera also noted the importance of the agreement given that both nations are members of BRICS (an international forum comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and have strong prospects for trade relations. "So we need areas of languages and cultures, and of course other areas of knowledge. It is from this perspective that we will welcome students and faculty from SUSE, a''also send our students and staff to conduct educational, research and extension activities in China,' she assured.
Unemat Vice Chancellor for Academic and Postgraduate Research Aurea Ignacio also emphasized that the exchange is expected to start in the near future. "The main thing in this collaboration is the opening of the Confucius Institute on the Sinop campus, which will offer Mandarin courses for Brazilians and Portuguese courses for Chinese. This will be very useful for postgraduate programs and a true collaboration in the field of international relations," said the vice chancellor.
The ceremony was also attended by Vice-Rector Alexandre Porto, Nurimat Chairperson Rita de Cassia Ciletto and Coordinator''Applied Languages for Internationalization of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) Carolyn Pereira de Oliveira.
SUSE Sichuan University of Science and Technology is a public provincial university located in Jigong City, Sichuan Province, China. Sichuan is the fourth most populous and fifth largest province in China by area.
