The program for the 14th annual festival includes the opening of "The Contestant," the story of a Japanese comedian who was locked in an apartment with no clothes on for 15 months as part of a reality TV show. The only turn? The comedian didn't realize he was being filmed. This documentary, which made its debut at TIFF, is directed by Claire Titley.
DOC NYC will take place November 8-26 and includes 30 world premieres and 26 U.S. premieres with more than 200 films in the program. Among them are new films from Wim Wenders, Penny Lane, Don Porter and Jeff Zimbalist. The films will be shown at the IFC Center, SVA Theatre and Village East by Angelika in New York City. In-person screenings will take place Nov. 8-16, and online screenings will be available through Nov.
The main screening will be the world premiere of "Uncropped" by D.V. Young on photographer James Hamilton, who captured art in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. The DOC NYC 2023 festival will conclude with "South to Black Power," a documentary about the New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, co-directed by Sam Pollard and Llewellyn Smith. A special 3D presentation of Wim Wenders' Anselm, about German artist Anselm Kiefer, will also be one of the highlights of the program.
The other films selected include documentaries about June Carter Cash ("June"), Queen Elizabeth II ("The Cowboy and the Queen"), women's reproductive health rights activist Bill Baird ("Yours in Freedom, Bill Baird"), attorney Alan Dershowitz ("The Trials of Alan Dershowitz"), Norman Mailer ("How to Come Alive. . with Norman Mailer"), WNBA women's basketball player Candace Parker ("Candace Parker: Unapologetic") and Harry Potter stand-in David Holmes ("David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived").
The DOC NYC Festival's Sonic Cinema program will feature the world premieres of "Pretty Ugly: The Story of the Lunachicks" and "Garland Jeffreys: The King of In Between".
Three of the festival's senior programmers will be responsible for specific sections: Ruth Somalo for the Kaleidoscope section, Karen McMullen for the Metropolis and Sonic Cinema sections, and Brandon Harrison for the Game Face Cinema section. They also selected other films for the festival along with Bedatri D's film programmers. Choudhury and Murtada Elfadl. Ali herself is the festival's senior short film programmer and works with programmers DeWitt Davis and Anita Rasvant.
