Matisse not only lived in this apartment, but also used one of the rooms as his studio. Françoise Gilot, the muse and lover of Matisse's rival, the painter Pablo Picasso, told the Wall Street Journal, "It was interesting to see that he lived the way he painted - when you entered the house, you were in his universe. "
He was known for collecting objects from around the world, which he kept in his home, and this was the inspiration for the exhibition "Matisse in the Studio" at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2017. Nice also has a permanent museum dedicated to Matisse, called the Matisse Museum, where many of his works are on display. Nice particularly influenced the artist throughout his life and until his death in 1954.
The apartment is for sale by Côte d'Azur Sotheby's International Realty.
