Ryan had been working in the hotel industry in Bali, Indonesia, for two years when COVID-19 hit. As tourism on the island came to a halt, the couple decided to move back to Thailand to be closer to relatives.

They traveled to Damo village in Buri Ram in eastern Thailand, where Damo relatives provided them with a plot of land. "We already had this land and had a plan to develop here in the future for our retirement," Ryan, 35, told Insider.

The couple, who have two young sons, provided information on their monthly expenses as well as all the costs of building their home and outdoor kitchen.
