The House is voting on the Israel bill in its first reading under the chairmanship of Mike Johnson.

House declares solidarity with Israel in first bill under new Speaker. The resolution promises to support Israel with whatever it needs to fight Hamas. However, a small group of mostly Democratic supporters refused to budge.
The vote was the first bill being considered under the chairmanship of Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican elected to the position Wednesday.
Housevoted by a stunning majority in favor of a resolution pledging support for Israel and providing all the security necessary to win the fight against Hamas.
The vote was 412 to 10. Nine Democrats and one Republican opposed the resolution. Of those, six Democrats voted in favor of being present, although five of them had previously co-sponsored the resolution.
The vote reflects the broad, cross-sectional support lawmakers expressed for Israel's efforts to expel Hamas from the Gaza Strip, which it has controlled since 2007, in response to its Oct.

But it also reflects the rejection of a small but determined minority of House Democrats who are calling for a cease-fire, saying Israel's bombing of Gaza has killed too many Palestinians. Hamas-controlled Gaza says Israeli strikes have killed more than 6,500 people, a number that cannot be independently verified.
The resolution affirms Israel's right to defend itself, condemns Hamas and calls for the release of hostages taken by it. It was written by Representatives Michael McCaul of Texas and Gregory Meeks of Texas.New Yorkthe Republican chairman and top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee. This text is similar to the resolution remaining in solidarity with Israel, which the Senate unanimously passed last week.
