Jay Leno has gained guardianship over the property of his wife, Mavis Leno, in the fight against dementia.

Jay Leno has been appointed as the conservator of his wife Mavis Leno's estate due to the philanthropist's battle with dementia. The conservatorship petition was filed by Leno in court.Los AngelesIn January, his request was granted during the hearing on Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.
"The court finds from clear and convincing evidence that the conservatorship of the estate is necessary and appropriate, as (Mavis Leno) is unable to manage her financial affairs and is susceptible to undue influence," states the court's conclusion.
Mavis agreed with the decision and did not oppose the conservatorship of the property. During the hearing, Judge Brenda J. Penny told Leno that everything he was doing was right and that she fully understood that this was a difficult time.
Jay Leno also shared at the hearing that he is in the process of drafting Mavis's will, according to People magazine.
The appointed attorney Mavis, Ronald E. Ostrin, declined to comment on the decision when asked about it by USA TODAY reporters. USA TODAY reached out to representatives of Leno for comments.
In January, Leno filed a petition in the Los Angeles court to become the conservator of his wife's estate and ensure the execution of her will, as she currently lacks the necessary capacity.

Mavis is suffering from dementia, according to the doctor who described her decline in cognitive functions.
The documents also state that Mavis Leno has been diagnosed with "advanced dementia" and sometimes does not recognize her husband, nor does she remember her date of birth. Leno also wants to manage half of the joint property and assets of Mavis in a trust that will provide for her brother and Leno.
Lawyer Mavis provided additional information about her condition in the documents submitted to the court.CaliforniaIn March, Dr. Cohen indicated that Mavis Leno indeed has advanced dementia and sometimes does not recognize her husband Jay or the date of her birth. She is confused and often thinks about her deceased parents, especially her mother who passed away around 20 years ago.
