Americans are increasingly buying real estate in Lisbon, Freire said. "Portugal used to be of interest to the British, Germans, Dutch and Brazilians," he said. "Americans are now among the top five main buyers in Portugal. They'"realize that it's only a six-hour flight from New York, and with a comfortable direct flight, they can have their '\'summer home'\' in Lisbon. Last year, nearly 10,000 U.S. citizens lived in Portugal, a 239% increase from 2017. "They often compare living in Lisbon to the California lifestyle, where you're 15 minutes from the water and 25 minutes from the beach. Plus, our airport is only 25 minutes from the center, which is very unusual for Europe.".
