The city of Wichita has been targeted by ransomware attacks.

In the city of Wichita, Kansas, an incident occurred that prompted local authorities to shut down their computer systems due to a ransomware attack. The event took place on May 5, 2024, and in response to this cyber threat, the city administration decided to temporarily halt the network infrastructure to prevent further spread of the threat.
An investigation is currently underway involving cybersecurity specialists as well as local and federal law enforcement officials to assess the scale of the incident and determine its consequences. The official security breach notification states: "Unfortunately, some of the city's online services are temporarily unavailable as we conduct a thorough analysis of the situation affecting a number of computer systems. As a result, we have shut down our computer network."
The authorities emphasized that the decision to suspend the operation of the systems was not easy, but a necessary step to ensure data security and proper verification of all components before reconnecting them.

At the moment, specialists from Wichita are continuing their investigation aimed at uncovering all the circumstances of the incident, including the possibility of a data leak. However, local authorities have not yet disclosed what specific type of ransomware was used in the attack, nor have they named the group responsible for this crime.
City officials report: "We are conducting a comprehensive review of the systems in collaboration with experts before their restart. The restoration of functions will be carried out in stages to minimize potential disruptions." In this regard, there is no clear timeline for when all systems will be able to return to normal operation. The situation regarding the name of the group that has claimed responsibility for the attacks remains closed to the public for operational security reasons.
