The group of ransomware developers Dark Angels claims to have stolen 1 TB of data from the chipmaker Nexperia.

The Dark Angels (Dunghill) extortion group claims to have hacked the chip manufacturer Nexperia and stolen 1 TB of the company's data. Nexperia is a semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Nijmegen, Netherlands. It is a subsidiary of the partially state-owned Chinese company Wingtech Technology. The company has factories in Hamburg, Germany, and Greater Manchester, England. Its product range includes bipolar transistors, diodes, ESD protection, TBS television diodes, MOSFETs, and logic devices.

As of 2024, the company employs 14,000 people.

Data leaks and threats

The Dark Angels extortion group has added Nexperia to their list of victims on their leak site on the Tor network. According to the announcement, the stolen data includes:

  • 285 GB of quality control data
  • 24 GB - 896 client folders, including brands like SpaceX, IBM, Apple, Huawei, and others.
  • 139 GB of project data, including NDA, internal documents, trade secrets, design, specifications, and production.

Reaction of the chip manufacturer

The chip manufacturer confirmed unauthorized access to certain servers in March 2024. Nexperia disconnected the infected systems from the internet and launched a data breach investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts.

A group of extortionists is threatening to publish all stolen data if the ransom is not paid. The previous hacking case involved Johnson Controls, which paid $51 million for its data in September 2023.
