IMI Familiar: tax advantage and jobs

Do you have children under 25 and still depend on you? Can you get a discount on real estate? How? Now you'll find out.

Municipal property tax (IMI) is something you can't escape if you own your own home. However, we have some good news for you. Depending on the number of children you have and the municipality you live in, you may be able to get a discount on this tax.

This benefit was created to help ease the budget of families with children and has been available since 2015, but many people are still unaware of it.

What is Family IMI?

This is a tax advantage, specifically a discount on the amount of IMI that depends on the number of minor children in the family.

Family IMI: Who is entitled to a discount?

To be eligible for the Family IMI, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a property owner.
  2. The property must be used as your own and permanent residence.
  3. The property must be listed as your residence for tax purposes.
  4. You must have one or more children under the age of 25 and no income.

Who decides on the Family IMI designation?

This decision is made by each municipality.''This means that even if your family meets the above requirements, you may still not be eligible for tax credits.

Every year, municipalities decide whether or not to grant Family IMI to their residents. To facilitate the decision, the Tax and Customs Service (AT) informs the municipalities by September 15 each year of the number of families that qualify for the rebate, and the municipalities must then communicate their decision to the AT by December 31 of the year to which the tax applies.

How do I calculate the amount of IMI I have to pay?

To calculate the amount of this tax, you must multiply your municipality's IMI rate by the taxable value of the property and subtract the discount given''by the municipality for the family. Note that AT takes into account the number of children in the family on the last day of the previous year before the tax is paid.

Formula:

IMI discounted = IMI rate x Tax value of property - Fixed family discount.

The IMI discount is applied automatically by AT, so the owner does not need to worry about anything to take advantage of this benefit.

Which municipalities participate and how do I find out if I am eligible.

The Portuguese Association of Large Families (APFN) indicates on its official website that in 2023, 270 municipalities are proposing a reduction in IMI for families with children, representing 88% of all municipalities in Portugal. Also on the association's website you can find out which
