In Spain, traditionally the majority of citizens own their own home. And this remains the case despite a decrease in the percentage of property ownership in recent years.

According to Eurostat, in 2021, 75.8% of the Spanish population lived in their own homes, while 24.2% rented.

However, Spain's homeownership rate lags far behind Romania, which has the largest population in the European Union living in their own home (95.3%). On the other hand, Germany is a member of the EU where living in rented accommodation is more popular as 50.9% of the population are renters.
