Changes in the operation of Barnard's restaurant and partner house in Greece

The Barnard Restaurant and Party House, which is owned by the Barnard Exempt Fire Company, has been around since 1935. If you've been a fan of the fish Friday dinners at the Barnard Restaurant and Party House for the past 17 years, you have a few weeks to try them one last time. Mike Sheedy, who has run the establishment since 2005, will hold his last dinner there on Nov. 18. His lease has not been renewed. However, Sheedy will continue to work at the Forest Hill restaurant, which is located at 41 E. Manitou Road in Greece, which he has owned since 1977.

"Barnard Restaurant and Party House" is one of the premier establishments in Greece, and is owned by the Barnard Exempted Fire Society. Founded in 1935, its primary purpose is to assist volunteer firefighters from the Barnard Fire District. This may include paying for lodging for a firefighter who is in recovery from an on-duty injury or supporting a family after a firefighter's death.

Barnard is one of four fire districts in Greece.

The building at 360 Maiden Lane was built in 1936, and the proceeds support the organization's mission. Years ago, Barnard Exempts members operated the bar and restaurant themselves, but as their numbers dwindled, they turned to restaurateurs and catering companies to run it.

Over the years, Barnard Restaurant and Party House has hosted many events such as baby showers, reunions, funeral dinners, weddings, banquets, anniversary celebrations, fundraisers, holiday dinners and more.

The organization is struggling financially and needs to increase revenue, said one of the organization's trustees, John Schick. The number of volunteer firefighters is dwindling, and consequently, there is less potential membership. The organization currently has 60 active members.

Barnard Exempts is in talks with potential tenants and is awaiting commercial proposals, Schick said. They would like to see the operator open the restaurant five or six days a week, not just Fridays as they do now. They also hope to use the organization's 14 acres of land and buildings to host large events; they've previously hosted the Roc City Rib Fest and the Barnard Fire Department's annual carnival.
