How do I get my property back?

If the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has temporarily identified items as your property, read the information below to learn more about the type of items and how to return them. Most property can be picked up at SMPD Headquarters [601 E. Trade St, Charlotte, 28202] Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. You may call 704-336-2378 or email [email protected] for more information or to order the destruction of your property.

Read the following information carefully and follow the instructions:

1. If your identified property on the next page includes a FIREARM:

There are several steps to release''firearms. If the information below indicates that the SHMPD has possession of a firearm, YOU MUST call 704-336-2378 before visiting the police station. A property technician will work with you to make sure all necessary steps have been completed to release the firearm. If the SHMPD does not receive contact within ninety (90) days of sending the notice, the firearm will be confiscated/destroyed in accordance with North Carolina State Law 15-12. After contacting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the remainder of the firearms release process may take an additional 3-6 months to complete.

If the next page indicates that the money is being released, YOU MUST call 704-336-2378 before visiting the police station to make arrangements to pick up a check. It may take 2-3 weeks for the SHMPD to receive the check, so make sure you call beforehand.

3. If the items on the next page are NOT firearms or money:

If this property is not claimed by you within thirty (30) days from the date the notice is sent, {date}, it will be disposed of in accordance with North Carolina State Law 15-12. Unclaimed bicycles may be donated to a charitable organization in accordance with G. S.''15A-12(b).
