Monumental, closed five years ago, could reopen in 2024 as a TUMO creative technology center - the second in Portugal after Coimbra. The former movie theater is located in the landmark and historic Monumental building, located in Lisbon's Saldanha district. This building is owned by Merlin Properties and is fully occupied by BPI.

Plans to open a school TUMO

According to Jornal Económico, Pedro Santa Clara, who brought the TUMO creative technology center project to Portugal, plans to install the school in the former Monumental cinema with the agreement of Merlin Properties, which is willing to provide the space for the first eight years.

It now needs the approval of Culture Minister Pedro Adao y Silva, who must authorize a change in the status of the venue as a concert hall.

Investment in the project

The anticipated investment, according to Pedro Santa Clara, will be in line with that invested in Coimbra - around seven million euros, including buildings, equipment and the first four years of operation, fully financed by companies and foundations. In Coimbra, a creative technology center is located in a building provided by Altice Portugal.

Project support and funding

"We count on the support of the Lisbon Municipal Commission and we already have at least three patrons," says the finance professor, who is revolutionizing the education system by introducing innovative projects in Portugal, such as 42 Lisbon, an advanced digital school, or 42 Porto, entirely financed by private companies and aimed at including and training talented young people in digital technologies.

About the TUMO

project

TUMO is a free educational project that complements formal education and aims to develop young people's skills to capitalize on the challenges and opportunities of the society of the future. "At TUMO, students will learn at the cutting edge intersection of technology and creativity, which includes photography, cinematography, animation and music, which are key to filmmaking," explains Pedro Santa Clara.
