Column: Whistler Cornucopia returns in November

November 9 to 19, northern British Columbia will host a food and drink festival. Cornucopia means "cornucopia," which is a symbol of abundance and nourishment, and that's exactly what Whistler offers every year in November. This year's Whistler Cornucopia Festival will take place from November 9 to 19, 2023. The festival is now in its 27th year and celebrates food and drink. What makes Whistler Cornucopia unique is that there are over 75 events, including main events, beverage seminars, culinary stage demonstrations and winery dinners. There is something for everyone at the festival, so you can choose and enjoy all sorts of activities to suit your interests and mood.

I would like to highlight some highlights and new' 'Events available at this year's Whistler Cornucopia (prices do not include applicable fees and taxes):

  • Dinner at Mekong Fine Thai Cuisine & Meyer Family Estate Wines (Nov. 10, 6-10 p.m., $215) - Mekong Fine Thai Cuisine, a relatively new restaurant in Whistler, has carefully selected a menu based on the traditions of Thai cooking to pair with wines from Meyer Family Vineyards.
  • Crush Grand Tasting (Nov. 11, 8:30 to 11 p.m., Whistler Conference Center, $95) is one of the festival's premier tasting events. Crush features wineries from the Pacific North as well as tantalizing dishes from restaurants in the Sea to Sky region. More than 50 international and regional wineries will showcase their wines.
  • Taste of Indigenous Worlds (Nov. 12, 7 to 9:30 p.m., Squamish Lil'\''wat Cultural Center, $85) is a new festival event,'' 'bringing together six Native American chefs from across B.C. who will showcase traditional cooking and ingredients combined with modern twists.

Participants will be able to stroll through the gallery and sample small appetizers paired with beverages.
  • Night Market: Taste of the World (Nov. 17, 8 to 10:30 p.m., Whistler Conference Centre, $75) - Embark on a global culinary adventure and sample a variety of dishes accompanied by wine, beer and spirits at a lively street fair.
  • Audain Artist Dinner: Garden of Shadows (Nov. 18, 7-10 p.m., Audain Art Museum, $99) is another new event showcasing art, nature and gastronomy. Participants will enjoy a cocktail reception, followed by an organized tour of' 'drinks. Some seminars I wouldn't want to miss include Masi: Exploring the Great Vineyards of Amarone in Verona on Nov. 12 and Loire Valley on Nov. 19. My recommended wine for this column is the Ornellaia 2020 Le Volte, an entry-level wine made by the famous Italian producer Ornellaia. It is a blend of 50% sangiovese and 50% cabernet sauvignon and merlot, aged for 10 months, partly in barriques used for Ornellaia wine and partly in cement tanks. It is intended for instant consumption but can also be stored. It is currently available for $30.99 at BC Liquor Stores (reduced from $34.99). Until next time, have a great time!"
