Conservatives are undergoing a Great Migration from blue states - and they are winning in one place.

Conservatives are moving en masse from blue states to one special Republican stronghold: South Carolina. According to U.S. Census data analyzed by The Wall Street Journal, from 2017 to 2021, about a third of new residents in South Carolina came from blue states, a quarter from red states, and the rest from divided states or outside the U.S. And, as the Journal reports, the majority of these newcomers—about 57%—were Republicans, citing data from a politically neutral voter data provider called L2.

In 2022, the ten main states from which people moved to South Carolina were North Carolina, Georgia, New York, California, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, and Maryland, according to census data verified by The State.

The company Conservative Move, which has about 500 agents across the country, helps conservatives find homes near like-minded individuals, and South Carolina is becoming a major attractive location. The founder of the group, Paul Chebot, told Business Insider that while Texas and Florida consistently rank among the top locations chosen for relocation by his conservative clients, he has noticed a significant surge in the number of people wanting to move to South Carolina over the past two years. He mentioned that his company currently has about 5,000 clients considering relocating to the state in the near future.

Many of his clients come from places like California, Washington State, and Oregon, he said. People who want to move are tired of living in states controlled by Democrats, which they believe are becoming less affordable due to liberal policies, such as the new law in California mandating a minimum wage of $20 for fast-food workers. In response, many fast-food restaurants have raised their prices. Conservatives are also leaving more liberal states that they no longer consider safe, Chebot said.

Brad Lyles, a real estate agent in South Carolina based in Spartanburg, told The New York Times that he and his colleagues have begun calling the invasion of Republican homebuyers in the state "the big move." According to Zillow data on median home prices, a typical South Carolina home sold for about $281,000 in February. In comparison, the median home sale price in California was about $673,000, while in Washington state it was about $526,000. South Carolina even has an edge over Texas and Florida, where the median home price was about $316,000 and $363,000, respectively, according to Zillow.

Some migrants from South Carolina told the Times that they are interested not only in affordability.

“When I walked into banks, stores, or schools, Christian music was always playing in the background,” said Lina Brock, who recently moved from California to Greenville, South Carolina, to the Times about her new city. “I felt good, I felt welcomed. I felt like I was in the United States.”

However, the arrival of new residents in Greenville has led to a rise in housing prices, which has excluded many native Black residents from being potential buyers, reports the Times. Since the early 1990s, the Black population of Greenville has decreased by 22%, according to a 2023 study from Furman University. At the same time, the overall population of the city has increased by 21% during the same period, the Times reports.

Chebot said that blue states should learn from red states.

"Right now, states are really competing with each other for population," Chebot said. "And so if these blue states want to improve, they need to look at what the red states are doing to hold on to their population and their companies."

Some blue states are experiencing population loss. For instance, in 2022, California lost over 300,000 residents, according to Forbes, citing census data, while Washington state lost about 15,000 residents, reported The Columbian. At the same time, red states like Texas are showing a positive balance - for example, Texas gained nearly 175,000 residents in 2022. Florida is leading in population growth, with a net increase of about 417,000 people between 2021 and 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
