Recently, the new culprits behind the increase in rental payments have been the owners of closed houses (who are being proposed to be taxed again).

One of the most serious problems we face in Greece is the conscious choice of thousands of owners to keep their properties closed, preferring not to rent them out. In the general discussion, several estimates were presented, indicating that there are 900,000 properties "off the market," including both private ones and those that are directly or indirectly owned by the state and the broader public sector. Considering that the only official figure presented is 750,000 properties, mentioned in 2022 by Minister Akis Skertsos, let's use that number.

Recently, I explained the consequences of the "My Home" program for the real estate market, especially in Athens and Thessaloniki. None of these options are a solution to the major problem of expensive housing.
