While Antigua's Prime Minister Gaston Browne referred to Yarabyka as Choksi's girlfriend, with whom he voluntarily went to the Dominican Republic to "have some fun," the jeweler's lawyer Vijay Aggarwal and his wife Preeti suggested that she might have been part of an Indian operation to extract Choksi from Antigua and transport him to India via the Dominican Republic.

Choksi's wife told The Indian Express in an interview that her husband had befriended Yarabyka over the past six months during morning walks and invited him to dinner at an apartment near Jolly Harbour in Antigua on May 23, from where he was kidnapped by 8-10 men who brutally beat him and took him away. "She is not from Antigua, but she visited from time to time. She came to Antigua in August last year, as well as in April and May of this year. For a short time, she lived in the apartment right across from ours in Antigua. She presented herself as a real estate repair worker.
