Monastery estate on the Venetian harbor
Location
It's difficult to find along a small (peaceful) street in the old town of Hanoi, not far from a cluster of trendy cafes and shops. There is (free) parking nearby - call ahead and they will pick up your luggage. Hanoi's labyrinth of shopping streets is nearby, as are other city attractions.
Style and character
Sister property (rustic) of the Monastery estate in Moni, this (much more luxurious) property, located in the former home of a Venetian aristocrat, is built on the foundations of 1st-century BC Roman ruins. Black metal staircases, shelves, and lighting at shin level add a modern touch. Remarkable original features include stone arches, high stone walls, and a large section of the original Roman city walls, which can be seen through glass floors on several levels (the best view is from the restrooms in the restaurant).
Services and amenities
Staff dressed in stylish black uniforms provide friendly and professional service. There is a small jacuzzi pool, a relaxation area, and a cozy (but atmospheric) original Turkish bath made of stone (not for the claustrophobic). The favorite space of the spa area with panoramic windows (free for guests) is located near the reception, so if you want some privacy for your romantic life, you need to close the curtains. They can also arrange treatments in your room for 55 euros (£49).

Numbers
The hotel has 11 suites in four categories - the doors are partially hidden in seamless panels made of blonde wood, creating an atmosphere of a secret establishment. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings. The style is minimalist - low cubic furniture, long shelves, black metal tables, open wardrobes - but with luxurious touches: plenty of toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, sheets and towels with monograms, plush mattresses. The overall impression is comfortable, yet sparse (there's a sense that functionality is sometimes sacrificed for design). The bathrooms have shower cabins.
Food and drinks
Breakfast can be served in your room (at no extra charge) or in a beautiful courtyard with high walls, where harems once lived. Breakfast is offered from a menu, but there is plenty of choice: pastries, croissants, bacon, as well as local specialties. The Cretan breakfast is enormous - dakos bread, Staka goat cheese, shiny olives, Apaki pork, and pies filled with wild greens - all served on a wooden plate. Room service is excellent value: sandwiches from €5 (£4), smoothies from €4 (£3), and the food is as wonderful as in the restaurant. The Mon.Es restaurant offers a limited selection of dishes, but Cretan cuisine is inventive, and the portions are generous. You will also be treated to a complimentary welcome dish (soup or salad). Among the magnificent dishes (there are many) is the deconstructed Cretan dakos (the bread is crumbled into a cheese pie topped with Mizithra cheese and caramelized tomato). Other highlights include a magnificent Cretan pie (similar to a quiche but with a crumbly crust) and beef shank braised in tomatoes and wine.
