A man from Georgia paid $31,000 for a Murdoch set at the Mozelle estate auction.

Last week in Georgia, household items previously owned by the Murdaugh family were sold, including a leather sofa on which convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh claimed he was napping the night his wife and son were killed.

Phillip Jennings from Soperton, Georgia, paid $31,400 for two leather sofas, two chairs, matching ottomans, and a rug. Jennings also purchased bedroom sets, mattresses, fishing boxes, and other small items that he said he would use at his hunting club, Broomsedge Rod and Gun Club, in Soperton. "People said it was grim or soulless, but that's not true," Jennings said. "This money will go to help the victims of those who have gone through a very tough time and have been hurt."

He said that although what happened is "one of the saddest stories," he simply bought the items out of necessity to fill the rooms of his club. He mentioned that he has several pieces of furniture from the same manufacturer in South Carolina as Murdock, and the purchase seemed logical to him.

"I hope we allow those beautiful things that belonged to Maggie to continue to exist," Jennings said. "Now she can't come back, but I would like to hope that when I leave, some of the magnificent items I've collected will continue to exist, and someone will enjoy them."

According to Jennings, the hunters in his club will be able to make good use of the furniture. "We want everything to be preserved and well taken care of," Jennings said. "We don't engage in the 'sit on the couch' process. We want these couches to be protected, just like the other components of our club."
