Thoughts of Trump's victory in 2024 are prompting some Americans to seek opportunities abroad.

The Trump era, along with COVID, has triggered a wave of Americans seeking a Plan B, a place where they can escape potential chaos. And the former President Trump's strength in the polls—he is ahead of President Biden in most key states, according to the latest polling data—has prompted wealthy, left-leaning Americans to start considering emergency exits.

“If the world is so bad that the United States has such problems, we are entering a very troubling chapter in human history,” says Major, who is originally from Canada. His firm works with “some very influential people in Massachusetts – and throughout the Boston/Harvard/MIT area.”

Polls show that for some groups of Americans, the desire to leave the United States has skyrocketed. During the Obama administration, for example, about 10 percent of women expressed a desire to move to another country permanently, according to the Gallup poll. During the George W. Bush administration, the figure was 11 percent. But during the Trump administration, 20 percent of women expressed a desire to leave permanently.

For the poorest 20 percent of Americans, the numbers increased from 13 percent under Obama to 30 percent under Trump.

One of Major's clients from the Boston area shared that Trump's election in 2016 was agonizing for her. She went to Portugal, investing $200,000 in the country with the possibility of obtaining citizenship through the "Golden Visa."

The desire to leave the United States has also heightened Americans' interest in emigration. Some felt that the restrictions in the U.S. were too strict, while others thought they were too lenient. Still, others were dissatisfied that even with a "beautiful blue passport with a golden eagle on the front," they suddenly found themselves unable to travel to many countries.

Surak notes that many Americans, without ever resorting to a plan B, want to have this flexibility. For those who decide to open international doors, options may include investing in Portugal or Spain or obtaining citizenship in Turkey or the Caribbean. Acquiring such passports, the woman believes, "gives me a long-term plan" in case the political situation becomes unbearable.

For Major, it is touching to see that he is now dealing with many Americans, after spending many years helping to relocate those in politically unstable situations, especially from China.
