"Real estate" for corals: a Swiss organization is building artificial reefs using art and technology.
A Swiss non-profit organization specializing in the development of artificial reefs made from clay using a 3D printer has launched a unique project aimed at preserving marine ecosystems. Experts from the organization Rrreefs have begun constructing an underwater castle in the depths of Lake Geneva to create the perfect habitat for corals.
It should be noted that coral reefs are an integral part of marine biodiversity, with 25 percent of underwater life depending on these fragile structures. Coral reefs provide shelter, breeding grounds, and food sources for fish, and they also protect coastlines from erosion.
The Rrreefs project aims to provide shelter for surviving coral larvae and give them a second chance to grow and attract other living organisms. A distinctive feature of this project is its passive approach to reef restoration. Rrreefs does not use cloning of organisms but relies on the natural reproduction of corals, which allows for the creation of a stable ecosystem resilient to global warming.
Innovative project Rrreefs
The innovative project Rrreefs brings together the efforts of four talented specialists. The main idea of the project originated at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH in Zurich.
The first attempts to implement the Rrreefs project have been successful. The initial prototypes of artificial reefs were placed in the Maldives and Colombia, attracting numerous inhabitants. Rrreefs plans to further develop the project and aims to create new reef installations in the Philippines. However, to realize all its ambitions, Rrreefs needs funding, so the team plans to establish a commercial company and seek partnerships with hotel chains to attract donations and raise awareness about the project among tourists. The members of the Rrreefs team are confident that their project can not only contribute to the preservation of the underwater world but also reflects their true beliefs and passion for the ocean.
