Real estate fosters the influx of foreign direct investments in Portugal

In the first six months of the year, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Portugal amounted to about 2 billion euros. According to data from Banco de Portugal (BdP), this "amount mainly corresponds to investments in real estate made by non-residents in Portugal."

According to the statistical report from BdP, published on August 29, 2023

By the end of June, the "assets" of foreign direct investments in Portugal amounted to 174 billion euros (69% of GDP), while Portugal's assets in foreign direct investments (FDI) totaled 66 billion euros (26% of GDP).

The central bank reports that "both 'assets' have been growing since 2008, although at different rates: FDI has more than doubled from the end of 2008 to the end of the first half of 2023, while FDI abroad has increased by 26%."

The BdP data also shows that from January to June, the volume of FDI amounted to 2,002.18 million euros. According to information provided by the regulator to the newspaper Público, 93.9% of this amount (i.e., 1,881.08 million euros) was directed to Portugal in the form of real estate investments.
