The new standing committees of the House will start work as soon as their members are selected from the various parties represented in parliament, which is expected by the middle of next month, Deputy House Speaker Pichet Chuamuangphan said on Wednesday.

Wan Muhammad Noor Mata, Speaker of the House, said he was authorized by the Speaker of the House to direct the appointment of members of the various committees to deal with public administration that requires urgent attention.

The parties represented in parliament will meet to discuss appointments on Thursday.

There are a total of 35 permanent committees in the chamber, each dealing with its own specific issue.

Members serve until the parliament is dissolved.

Mr. Pichet said that on September 7, the parties will meet again to decide on the method for selecting the chairs of the committees.

On September 12, the parties will need to submit the names of their candidates for each position.

The names will be announced in parliament the next day.

On September 14, the permanent committees will hold their first meetings, during which they will elect a chairperson, vice-chairpersons, and official representatives.

Mr. Pichet said that they will start working right away.

The deputy speaker said that the number of committee chairs allocated to a party depends on the size of the party.

For example, the Promotion Party (MFP) with 151 deputies will be able to select the chairs of 11 committees.

However, this number will decrease to 10 if the party has 150 seats or fewer, which will happen if it loses the elections in Raion on September 10.

Elections were scheduled following the resignation of MFP deputy Nakornchai Khunnarong on August 3, after it was revealed that he was serving an 18-month prison sentence for a minor theft committed 24 years ago.

Mr. Pichet said that the recommendation from the MFP regarding the selection of committee chairs will be discussed at the meeting on Thursday.

The party claims that a committee cannot be led by a party member who controls the ministry that the committee is supposed to oversee.

For example, the House Finance Committee cannot be chaired by a member of the party responsible for the Ministry of Finance.
