The new Minister for Housing in Gibraltar is tackling issues related to surveillance and antisocial behavior at the Rock.

The Minister of Housing of Gibraltar, Pat Orfila, recently discussed issues related to the repair of a shed roof, the installation of surveillance systems, and antisocial behavior with residents of public housing. Orfila, who was elected to the government for the first time last October, has the task of addressing housing issues on the Rock. She met with the chairwoman of the Laguna Estate Residents' Association, Jessica Collado, and her deputy, Nicole Gomez. They also raised issues regarding ongoing improvements and specific paint at the meeting. After the meeting, Ms. Collado expressed satisfaction with the productive discussion, noting progress on some agenda items and ongoing efforts on others. "She emphasized the need to maintain regular communication with representatives of the Housing Service and Minister Pat Orfila," the government statement said.

Minister Orfila stated that she wants to have "regular contacts with all residents' associations" during her time in government. She expressed her desire to "build strong working relationships and welcome ideas and suggestions for improving residents' living conditions." Laguna Estate is named after the marshy saline lagoon in front of Landport Gate, where it was built. Along with Glacis Estate, it is part of the early attempts by the local government to address the growing housing problem on the Rock. Before the emergence of public housing, the civilian population mainly lived in the upper town within the city walls. Since the 1990s, governments have invested millions in building homes for young families in Gibraltar.
