The declaration recognizing Casa Cornide as a cultural heritage site (BIC), an 18th-century mansion owned by the family of dictator Francisco Franco, is final, and the obligation to open it to the public for at least four days a month has already come into effect.

Last month, the official journal of Galicia published a statement recognizing Casa Cornide as a cultural heritage site (BIC), after which it was published in the State Bulletin, and the deadlines for submitting administrative or judicial appeals against this decision by the Galician government began.

After the expiration of this period and in the absence of appeals, the property became a cultural heritage site under all practical conditions, which includes the obligation for the owners to allow "free public access for at least four days a month, for four hours a day, to be determined in advance."

The Government Council of Galicia recognized Casa Cornide as a cultural heritage site (BIC) on April 27. It is located in the historic center of the city of A Coruña, opposite the Collegiate Church of Santa María.

The ownership of this property is currently the subject of disputes.

After belonging to the Kornide family, it became public property, and then, as a result of a transaction made during the dictatorship, the city administration of A Coruña held an auction, and it was transferred to Carmen Polo, Franco's widow. In this regard, the city administration announced its intention to initiate legal proceedings for its return.

This 18th-century building is one of the few examples of residential architecture of the Enlightenment in Galicia, where one of the prominent figures of the Enlightenment, the polymath from Coruña, José Andrés Corni de Folgueira y Saavedra, lived.

Among other things, it was the building of the A Coruña city hall, and local memorialists are demanding its return at the municipal level, in an operation similar to the one the state carried out with the Paso de Meirás. (Information compiled by EFE)
