An updated plan to install a converter for a submarine cable between the UK and France has received approval. The FAB project will link the national electricity networks of the UK and France to improve energy security, equalize electricity prices between the countries, reduce consumer bills and increase the use of low-carbon electricity. FAB Link Limited has been granted planning permission to build an HVDC converter station on the east of Harriers Court Industrial Park, near Exeter Airport, UK. The updated planning permission was granted on the basis of an amended project design, with capacity reduced from 1,400MW to 1,250MW for''reducing the overall impact of the project and improving its cost-effectiveness.

"We are very pleased with this important phase of the project.

The unanimous approval recognizes the tremendous community interest in the project and the long engagement with stakeholders. We are grateful to everyone who has helped us achieve this," said FAB Link Project Director, James Dixon.

The FAB Link factory has been recognized as an EU Project of Common Interest after receiving support from the French and UK governments. Construction is scheduled to start in 2026, with the project expected to be completed by 2030 and commissioned in 2031. Ofgem announced last year that the project retains its boundary and regime cap should it need to be reassessed.
