Official opening of AI Safety Hub in Serbia.

Official opening of AI Safety Hub in Serbia.

>With today's announcement, we are pleased to announce that our co-working office for AI security researchers is now open for permanent tenants. You can check out the photos below to see a little preview. We invite Russian and Chinese citizens first, as they can enjoy the benefits of visa-free work in Serbia and be close to Europe. That said, our office rent is a surprisingly affordable 150 euros per month, about half the usual cost in Belgrade. For those who need financial support, we have subsidies available. You can register your interest here or get answers to any questions you may have - our mail is open and we look forward''Looking forward to your inquiries.

In the future, we hope to provide housing for these researchers. If you are interested in supporting our mission, please contact us. Together, we can increase the impact of AI safety research. Your support can be the catalyst for a remarkable journey.

You may want to consider our proposal if:

  • The EA Serbia and AI Safety Serbia groups are small but growing (30+ people in EA Serbia, about 3 people intending to pursue a career in AI safety research, and about 3 people interested in AI safety policy). Thanks to Serbia's favorable visa policy towards Russia and China, many foreigners already live here. Belgrade offers less''While not as luxurious as many other EA/AI co-working spaces (the concentration room is missing from the photos), we are given opportunities to create an even better office space. If there are a lot of us, we can move to a larger space as our needs grow. Of course, if we find out that there will be more demand, purchasing an office in Belgrade that is a bit away from the city center and includes residential space would be a better solution, but we don't want to explore that possibility until it is proven to be feasible.

Details of the organization (i.e., how it works): The office is leased until the end of December 2023 to keep a favorable price instead of looking for another location. The office already has some''Tables and chairs, but we want to get funding and find out what people's needs are before buying more furniture.

The office is usually open during the café's business hours (10:00am to midnight, except on weekends when it opens from 4:00pm to midnight) as they share a common entrance, but exceptionally we can accommodate special requests if someone is more comfortable working at non-standard hours. Office space is provided primarily for those working on projects related to AI security. However, EA/Rationality research is also welcome when we have space available (which is the case now). A visa to Serbia is not required for many and relatively easy to obtain for others. If you need a visa to come to Serbia,''apply and we will do our best to help you. We have a trusted real estate agent who can help make good deals on housing in Belgrade for those who need help finding a place to live, until we get funding and can rent shared housing. For those who want to receive prepared food on a regular basis, we can arrange to have inexpensive prepared meals delivered to your office or your housing (at your expense) - vegetarian or not. If we have enough interest, we can also ask the cook to prepare vegan meals. Would you like to contribute? The project is currently run by Dušan D. Nešić and a few other people at the operational level. Our current problem is funding - we have found a sponsor willing to cover''half of our minimum budget, but are looking for a second funding partner. The funding will allow us to stay in the space longer and provide more stipends to researchers who need it. As we grow, we'd like to recruit more volunteers to help us with the day-to-day running of the project - let us know if you're interested.
