PAN in Lisbon municipality proposed this week to temporarily suspend the sale of real estate to non-residents in Portugal, which the PSD called "illegal" and the Initiative Liberal Party (PL) warned against "positive xenophobia".
The proposal is contained in a motif in which the PAN calls for "housing is a fundamental social right" and presents a set of 13 measures, including a "temporary suspension of the sale of real estate to natural or legal persons who are not''residents of Portugal, with the exception of immigrants with a residence permit'.
"We are presenting today a motive that reminds us that the right to housing is a fundamental right, and in today's Portugal this is not the case," said Antonio Morgado Valente, the only deputy of the PAN (Pessoas-Animais-Natureza) party in the Lisbon municipality (AML).
The PAN motive notes that "the increase in tourism, gentrification, low wages in Portugal, speculation in the real estate market and the recent increase in the Euribor rate have led to an increase in real estate prices, making it unaffordable for many people.
Contradictions of opinion
Regarding the temporary suspension of real estate sales to unregistered Portuguese residents,'''IL MP Angelique Da Teresa says the proposal is "totally unacceptable" and warns against "positive xenophobia".
"Let's stop holding ideological prejudices against each other and increase the supply [of housing]," defends IL MP.
PD deputy Carlos Reis questioned the municipal assembly on the admissibility of the proposal, saying it was "illegal" and suggested that the PAN withdraw it.
"As a political will, it should be accepted," CDS-PP deputy Margarida Penedo pointed out.
In response to the warnings, the PAN MP said that "exceptional measures must be taken for an exceptional situation," pointing out that Canada has taken such measures and considering that it can''help solve the real estate problem.
Therefore, Antonio Morgado Valente moved that the motive be sent to the 5th Commission on Housing and Local Development and Municipal Works at AML for a chance to revise it before voting, which was approved by a majority vote, with votes against Chega and votes in favor of the rest.
