The first 3D-printed house in Portugal costs more than you think: a 2-bedroom apartment in Vila do Conde.

A house was built in Portugal using a 3D printer.

The first house in Portugal was built using a 3D printer. It is a two-bedroom apartment with an area of 90 square meters and a garden, with walls lined with cork to prevent heat loss, giving it a modern and minimalist look. The house was printed in just 18 hours, but assembly took a bit longer - two weeks.

It is located in Vilar do Pinheiro, Vila do Conde, and could mark the beginning of a process that helps tackle the high cost of housing in Portugal.

The company Havelar and their project

The company Havelar is behind this project and believes that it can build homes at significantly lower prices than the norm in Portugal. A small house, similar to the one just completed in Vila do Conde, can cost around 150,000 euros, excluding the cost of the land.

The concept and future of the project

The concept is that the walls of the house are created using a 3D printer, while the roof, interior materials, and furniture are made from conventional materials, just like in any other house. The walls are printed in blocks, after which the house needs to be assembled within two weeks.

“Our goal is to create a solution for the housing crisis using technology that will change the way homes are built in the future, with a high level of automation and sustainability, which is a very important aspect of our strategy.”- explained Havelar's CEO Patrick Eichenher.
