Marilyn Monroe's dress was sold at auction for $325,000 - eight times the original estimate.
The dress that she reportedly wore for a photoshoot for Vogue magazine with photographer Bert Stern was sold on Thursday evening at Julien's Auctions, along with a collection of iconic Playboy items (the first issue of Playboy magazine featuring Monroe on the cover).
A dress made for the Saks Fifth Avenue department store in New York by Italian designer Emilio Pucci was expected to sell for between $40,000 and $60,000.
Other items related to Marilyn Monroe that are up for sale until Saturday include:
- first edition of the magazine
- the evening black dress from the movie "The Seven Year Itch"
- swimsuit from the movie "There's No Business Like Show Business"
- the umbrella she used in the 1949 photoshoot
- a black bra featuring a photo of Monroe on it
The auction also featured items belonging to Playboy founder Hugh Hefner - his iconic burgundy smoking jacket, silk pajamas, and slippers, which sold for $35,750 (more than ten times their estimated value), as well as dozens of pieces of furniture and decor from the famous Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.
The most expensive souvenir item of Marilyn Monroe was a dress sold for 4.8 million dollars.
She wore that dress to sing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to John Kennedy in 1962, and it was sold at Julian's in 2016.
Eight years after the sale, the "Happy Birthday" dress was retrieved from the archives and worn by Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala.
