The winner of the elections in Thailand and the main ally have reached an agreement on the speaker of the house.
The winner of the elections in Thailand, the Move Forward party, and the second-place Pheu Thai party agreed on Monday (July 3) to appoint a senior member of their coalition as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. The decision was made through a parliamentary vote and announced at a joint press conference following the opening of parliament, which was conducted by King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida.
“We will nominate Mr. Van Muhammad Nur Mata for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, with a representative from the Move Forward party as the First Deputy Speaker and a representative from the Pheu Thai party as the Second Deputy Speaker,” said Pita Limjaroenrat, the main candidate for Prime Minister and leader of the Move Forward party.
The candidate for the speaker position is a 79-year-old veteran politician from the southern province of Thailand, Yala, and the leader of the Prachachat party. His political group joined forces with the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties to form a coalition with five other allies after the general elections on May 14, when Mr. Pita's party unexpectedly won, securing 151 seats in parliament.
Important Points:
- The Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties have agreed to appoint Wan Muhammad Noor Matha as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
- In order for Mr. Pitt to become Prime Minister, he needs the approval of at least half of the National Assembly.
- The main goal of the agreement is to form a government that responds to the consensus of the people.
According to Mr.
Three candidates are ready to promote agendas that will bring transparency, oversight, and efficiency to the Thai parliamentary system, ensuring that it "belongs to the people," he added. The position of Speaker of the House of Representatives has become a point of contention between the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties in recent months, as both sides have targeted the top legislative power.
Additional Details:
- The Move Forward Party notes that having a speaker is essential for speeding up legislative procedures.
- Members of the Pheu Thai party believe that the position of speaker does not necessarily have to be handed over to Move Forward.
Mr. Wan Muhammad Nur Mat previously headed several ministries in previous governments. He also served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of Parliament from 1996 to 2000.
