Why are the Portuguese moving back home?

Over the past five years, 36% of Portuguese people have changed their place of residence, with 7% having moved in the last year. These are the findings of a study conducted by Observador Cetelem, a commercial brand of the BNP Paribas Personal Finance group, and reported by the resource idealista. According to the study, the main reasons for moving are changes in family composition (33%), economic reasons (32%), and professional motives (17%).

"The majority (31%) of those who cited economic reasons for moving are in the age group of 35 to 44 years.

On the other hand, in the youth age group (from 18 to 24 years), the percentage of other reasons is higher: changes in family composition (43%) and professional motives (30%)," the study concludes.

Most respondents, nearly seven out of ten (69%), report that they own their own home, while 28% live in rented accommodation. The remaining 4% of respondents chose the "other" option, which includes living in family homes, the company reports.

According to the study, more people in Porto live in their own homes (72%), followed by the Southern region (71%) and the Northern region (68%).
