Recently before Christmas, I walked through the center of Cortina d'Ampezzo, a famous ski resort in the Dolomites.
I had one mission that day: to find traces of a bobsled track built in the 1920s that was said to be in complete disrepair, partially dismantled and partially engulfed by forest.
I wanted to see what was left of this strange structure - a huge track among the trees where athletes once raced on bobsleds - not because I was interested in sports archaeology, but because the track had become a symbol of something much bigger and more complex.
