Young Myanmar man suspected of killing former Thai ambassador

The young Myanmar man suspected of murdering former Thai ambassador to Denmark Wichit Chitwimarn has been found dead at his home in Chatuchak district. He fled Thailand the next day, crossing the border into Myanmar in Chiang Rai province.

Details of events

Details of the alleged events before, during and after the killing were released by police on Monday.

The only suspect

Colonel Attapol Anusit, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 2, said the only suspect so far is Sai Myat Moe, a 19-year-old Myanmar national.

Found dead

Wichit, a 63-year-old man, was found dead with three stab wounds to his chest at his home at 20 Wibhawadi Rangsit Street on Sunday. He reportedly moved into the house on Sept. 9 and lived there alone. The suspect had been working for him at the home since Sept. 19.

Data from the videotape

Colonel Attapol said the suspect was a house painter. He was seen in the video arriving at the victim's home in the township on Sept. 25. Vichit opened the gate and let him inside.

Three days later, the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim on the first floor of the home. Vichit ran to the second floor restroom where his assailant threatened him with a knife, forcing the former messenger to give him his bank card pin number.

Murder and robbery

After learning the PIN, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times, killing him. He then allegedly stole all the valuables he could find in the house and fled the village in a cab. Wichita's phones and tablets are missing from the house. Hundreds of thousands of baht were later withdrawn from his account at an ATM in a shopping center in Lat Phrao district.

Crossing the border

The suspect then went to the Mo Chit bus station and took a bus north to Chiang Rai province, on the border with Myanmar. Col. Attapol said Chiang Rai Province Immigration Police reported that the suspect crossed the border into Myanmar through the Mae Sai border crossing at 7:22 a.m. on Sept. 29.
